Westleaf Staff: What's up Swish? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?
Swish Da God: I started making music at 7. I was born & raised around musicians. They helped me see a different world, which was the industry, and how it’s so many interesting genres. They helped me break out of the box at a young age with music.
Westleaf Staff: Real! That's dope. Salute to the fam. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?
Swish Da God: During my childhood music was in my household, my childhood church, and my family in general . I couldn’t escape it and it was apart of me, it stuck with me. It helped me express my feelings when I couldn’t just have a conversation. It helped with my mental health and also my drive to be better consistently.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope. What city do you represent?
Swish Da God: I’m from the 410. Can’t stop, won’t stop, Baltimore Baby!
Westleaf Staff: Shoutout to Baltimore! Y'all have some talent. So how did you create your stage name?
Swish Da God: You know, about half of my family was deeply into sports, particularly basketball, and they aspired to pursue careers in that field. However, I had a different passion—I wanted to dive into the world of music. To maintain a connection to my family's sports enthusiasm while pursuing my musical dream, I chose the stage name 'Swish.' As for 'Da God,' it was inspired by Ol' Dirty Bastard's unreleased track, where he proclaimed, "I'm Da Original G-O-D." I wanted to pay tribute to him because he's someone I truly admire. He was incredibly creative, and I look up to him as a role model.
Westleaf Staff: Ha! That's cool. ODB is a legend. So who is your biggest Musical influence?
Swish Da God: Missy Elliot, Dirty Ol' Bastard, DMX, and Nicki Minaj stand as my top four most significant musical influences. Their unparalleled versatility, unique styles, and captivating artistry have played a pivotal role in shaping me into the artist I am today, allowing me to infuse my own unique flair into my work.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Those are legends! What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?
Swish Da God: My defining moments consistently revolve around personal growth and evolution when I'm writing. There's nothing quite like that electrifying feeling of making the "stink face" and being utterly amazed by the creativity in my own writing. I can palpably sense the progression, the development, and the distinctive evolution in each cadence. I believe this transformation is evident in my earlier work, such as 'Opus,' as well as in my more recent creations, like 'Keenan & Kal.'
Westleaf Staff: That's real! I love your progression! So what does art mean to you?
Swish Da God: Art is a reflection of one's state of mind and identity. Each of us is a unique individual with distinct aspirations. Our thoughts and desires diverge, making us distinct, and this divergence is what allows us to paint our own stories and shape our futures. Art is the vessel for our personal journeys and growth, capturing the essence of who we are as we express ourselves creatively.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?
Swish Da God: I envision myself as an artist who is constantly on the move, exploring new horizons and sharing the stage with some of the greatest talents in the industry. Along this journey, I aspire to continue growing and reaching new heights on the charts. All the while, I am committed to staying true to my authentic self, maintaining my unique artistic identity.
Westleaf Staff: You can do it. So what makes you a unique artist?
Swish Da God: What sets me apart as a unique artist is the distinctiveness of my style and charisma that resonates in my songs. You can hear the versatility in my voice, whether it's transitioning into a deep, raspy tone or adopting a playful one. I make my mark with memorable intros, such as announcing my own name or incorporating my catchphrase, "A Nigga Got Barz." My beats are characterized by their perplexing and unconventional nature, giving my music an unmistakable edge. Through my work, you can sense my hunger, my determination to stay in my own lane, and my defiance against conforming to someone else's mold.
Westleaf Staff: That's super insightful. Before we go, describe music in three words.
Swish Da God: Mesmerizing , creative, and beautiful.
