Cutting a striking figure with the blown-out sonics to match, Cortisa Star made an immediate impression when she teleported onto timelines in Fall 2024. Her unapologetically raw and bracingly confrontational bangers dare listeners to meet the 19-year-old rapper where she lives, on the blurred edge of smack-talking rap music and serrated hyperpop.
Today, Cortisa shares her new single, "Misidentify," which takes aim at her most vocal detractors and asserts that she is here for the long haul. Produced by Umru (known for his work with Charli XCX and A.G. Cook), "Misidentify" layers corrosive synths over rocket-propelled snares, providing a launching pad for Cortisa to stack memorable punchlines. Arranging her vocals into a frayed aural attack, the openly-trans artist sets her sights on haters who hide behind computer screens, effortlessly walking over them with a schoolyard cadence: "Call me 'man,' but I don't give a f*ck, cause I'm that f*cking guy!"
"Misidentify" follows in the wake of "FUN," her ear-bleeding anthem, which went viral in late 2024 along with its accompanying From The Block performance. With her clear-frame glasses, leopard-print coat, Spider-Man t-shirt, and her sexually frank, flex-heavy bars, she charmed and intrigued the online public–including stars like Charli XCX, who follows her on Instagram–racking up over 5 million streams in the process.
Born and raised in Delaware, Cortisa Star has developed her brand of internet-pilled rap music by releasing a series of bite-sized singles in 2023 and 2024. She first attracted attention with 2023's "Get It Down," a frenetic, hyperpop-adjacent banger that racked up over 1 million streams across platforms. 2024's "Cortisa Crump" caught the ear of tastemakers like The FADER, who praised how the song "morphs a holy church hymnal into a bass-busting drill ripper." After the release of "FUN," Cortisa opened up about her viral fame in interviews with DAZED and Interview Magazine, establishing the young star as a burgeoning fashion icon.
Following her own muse as she shapes rap's future, Cortisa Star is more than ready to live up to her potential. Stay tuned for more from the young artist, as she prepares to release her debut full-length later this year.
